Videographer, photographer, and content creator Todd White always seems to know how to get the best out of his subject. He’s clearly a pro—an Emmy Award-winning producer and videographer—yet Todd has a beginner’s enthusiasm, with a palpable delight in not only his subjects, but the gear that he uses to bring his vision to life. He’s taken a special interest in the S-X50 lens and we definitely are all ears!
In these portraits, he’s paired the S-X50 with his LUMIX S1 and S1R and he finds this fixed lens a perfect choice, enabling him to compose his shots without fuss. And he’s getting gorgeous results: “I love that the bokeh is so flattering and so pretty . . . the shape [of the back of the lens] is circular which gives you that wonderful circular bokeh.”
Looking at his portraits, they are infused with life—movement, rich color, gorgeous light that conveys the feeling of being in the moment – from outdoor poses that radiate joie de vivre, to a whole photo series that features pastel pops of color. One subject comes to life quite literally, bursting through the pink backdrop!
Even for more subdued tasks such as shooting ecommerce, Todd finds a trusted companion in the S-X50—easier to edit in post, especially when it comes to cropping and framing: "If I'm in the studio shooting for a client, like e-commerce for a boutique, I don't want to have to think about the focal length at times. I want to focus on the shot.” The images stay free from any distortion, too; they’re “tack-sharp from head to toe.” This lens is also a great choice for a tight second camera angle in interviews, complementing the wider 35mm f/1.4 that supports the primary camera.
Looking to the future, Todd is eagerly anticipating seeing the growth of possibilities of fashion and lifestyle photography that come hand-in-hand with the increased capabilities of cameras. In addition to loving the LUMIX S1 and S1R, he sings the praises of the new S5 – “an everyday run-around camera” that fits the bill: “ I love that camera more than I can express . . . a perfect, well-rounded camera.” He’s thinking of indulging his foodie nature by doing more culinary-related shoots, too.
With his highly trained eye and admitted obsession with light, color, and movement, one thing’s for sure: whatever Todd White sets his mind to do next, we at LUMIX are here for it.
