Q
What is the voltage of eneloop batteries?
A
The initial voltage of eneloop is about 1.2 V. This is slightly lower than alkaline dry batteries, typically around 1.5 V. However, alkaline battery voltage gradually decreases during use, which can affect device performance. In contrast, eneloop rechargeable batteries can maintain a stable discharge rate of around 1.2 V. This ensures consistent performance in devices that require AA batteries, as these devices are typically designed to operate within a voltage range of 0.9 V to 1.5 V. For more information on this topic, please click here.
Q
What does the eneloop charge cycle mean?
A
The charge cycle refers to the number of times your eneloop battery can be recharged. The estimated number of cycles for eneloop was initially based on the test conditions specified in the IEC standard (IEC61951-2 2011, Section 7.5.4.1). However, the IEC standard was revised in 2017 to more stringent test conditions that better reflect real-world usage. Under these updated conditions, the number of cycles is less.
Q
Can I mix eneloop and dry batteries in my device?
A
Never use a mix of dry batteries and eneloop in your device except when the manufacturer explicitly permits it. Also, do not mix batteries of different capacities, types, brands, or ages. This is because the capacity differs between types, brands, and even production batches of the same battery. That difference can increase dramatically during usage, leading to over-discharge and leakage. When using eneloop batteries, ensure that you charge them all together at the same time. Replace all the batteries used for the device at the same time. If you mix partially depleted and charged eneloop, there is a risk of leakage.
Q
Can eneloop batteries be recycled?
A
Please contact your local government or check the sorting guidelines issued by your local government. In some countries, recycling of rechargeable batteries is required by law. In the EU, for example, stores selling over 35 kg of batteries annually must have a designated recycling point. Please also refer to this website (for EU) and this website (for North America).
Q
Are there any devices in which eneloop batteries can't be used?
A
eneloop batteries are not suitable for the following types of devices:
- Waterproof devices, such as underwater lights, as there is a risk of these devices exploding if the battery over-discharges and generates flammable gas.
- Devices explicitly marked in their manuals as incompatible with Ni-MH rechargeable batteries under any circumstances.
- Devices with structural differences in battery-compartment size lead to poor contact with the battery terminals. For instance, if there is no contact with either the positive or negative terminal or when the battery's diameter is too wide.
- Devices equipped with battery indicators. The voltage difference between eneloop and alkaline batteries may cause the indicator to display a lower remaining capacity than the actual charge level.
Q
What does mAh mean on eneloop batteries?
A
Rechargeable battery capacity is indicated as mAh (milliampere/hour). The formula for calculation is as follows: Capacity (milliampere/hour) = discharge (milliampere) x discharging time (hour). For example, consider a rechargeable battery with a 2000 milliamperes/hour capacity. If you insert this battery into a device that continuously consumes 100 milliamperes of current, the device's operating time will be approximately 20 hours mathematically. However, please note that this is just a guideline, as actual operating time may vary depending on the device's performance and usage conditions.
Q
What is the memory effect?
A
Memory effect is a phenomenon seen in Ni-Cd and Ni-MH rechargeable batteries, including eneloop batteries, that causes a decrease in their maximum voltage despite maintaining the same overall battery power. This occurs when batteries are repeatedly charged without being fully depleted, leading the battery to "remember" its reduced usage capacity. Consequently, the voltage may drop prematurely during usage, even when the battery is fully charged. Since eneloop batteries have a higher and more stable discharge voltage than conventional Ni-MH batteries, a sufficient voltage is maintained even if the memory effect occurs. You can recharge as needed without worry. Furthermore, selected Panasonic battery chargers also feature a Refresh Function that discharges and recharges the battery to restore its performance.
Q
Is there a size difference between dry batteries and eneloop?
A
The dimensions of eneloop batteries are based on IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) standards, making them suitable for devices designed for the equivalent dry battery sizes. However, in some rare cases, you might find it challenging to install the batteries comfortably. Avoid forcing the batteries inside, as doing so could damage the battery compartment, battery or device terminals, or the battery itself and cause overheating.
Q
What is an adapter or a battery spacer?
A
An adapter or battery spacer for eneloop AA is an additional casing that converts eneloop AA to the equivalent size of a C or D-size dry battery. This conversion enables the temporary use of AA eneloop in devices designed for C or D-size dry batteries. However, please note the following, as the spacer and the original battery have different sizes and characteristics:
- Spacers are intended for temporary use only and should not be used continuously.
- Not all eneloop batteries may be compatible with the spacer due to varying characteristics among batteries.
- The spacer may not fit securely into the battery compartment due to slight dimensional differences between the spacer and the battery size specified for the device.
- When using multiple batteries, avoid mixing battery types. For example, don't use an eneloop battery fitted into a spacer with a dry battery of the same size.
- When using two or more spacers, ensure that the inserted eneloop batteries have the same capacity, date of manufacture, and remaining capacity.
- Insert the spacer into the device only when the device needs to be powered.
- Devices using eneloop AA inserted in spacers will have a shorter run time than those using C or D dry batteries.
- Do not attempt to charge the eneloop battery when it is inserted into the spacer.
- Only use eneloop in the spacer; do not use alkaline batteries.
Q
What's the difference between "best before" and "manufacturing date"?
A
The "best before" date printed on dry batteries is the period until optimal performance is guaranteed. Since eneloop batteries can be used repeatedly and the period varies depending on the conditions of use, the date of manufacture is stated instead. Thanks to their unique low self-discharge characteristics, if your purchase was within five years of manufacturing and depending on the storage conditions, you can use medium-capacity eneloop immediately without charging.
Q
Can eneloop batteries (1.2 V) be used in devices where dry batteries (1.5 V) are typically used?
A
In general, most devices are designed to accommodate the characteristics of dry batteries and operate within a voltage range of 1.5 V to 0.9 V. While the initial voltage of eneloop is lower than dry batteries, they can maintain a steady discharge level for as long as they retain capacity. On the other hand, the output voltage of dry batteries, such as alkaline batteries, declines from the moment they are used. Thanks to this characteristic, eneloop can be used in devices where dry batteries are normally used, even with its lower initial voltage.
Q
What is spontaneous battery discharge (self-discharge)?
A
Dry batteries and Ni-MH batteries generate electricity through chemical reactions between the materials inside the battery. These types of batteries are known as chemical batteries. Even when a chemical battery is not being used, a gradual chemical reaction occurs that gradually consumes stored energy. This phenomenon is called self-discharge. The rate of self-discharge is influenced by the temperature: higher temperatures result in greater self-discharge. Storing batteries in a cool, dry location is advisable to minimize self-discharge. Generally, Ni-MH batteries tend to lose more electricity when left unused than dry batteries. Therefore, if the battery has been left unused for an extended period, it is recommended to recharge it before use.
Q
Can I use eneloop until the device stops working?
A
Using eneloop until the device stops working may lead to over-discharging. Over-discharging occurs when the device continues to draw power even after the battery has no usable capacity remaining. Some devices may also draw a weak current even when switched off. Over-discharging puts excessive stress on eneloop batteries and can shorten their lifespan. To extend the battery's life and maximize its charge/discharge cycles, it is advisable to recharge eneloop before the device stops working completely. Doing so can prevent over-discharging, prevent reductions in the number of charge/discharge cycles, and secure discharge performance.

Q
Can eneloop be charged up to 2,100 times?
A
The estimated battery life (number of cycles) for eneloop was initially based on the test conditions specified in the IEC standard (IEC61951-2 2011, Section 7.5.4.1), suggesting up to 2,100 charging cycles. However, the IEC standard was revised in 2017 to more stringent test conditions that better reflect real-world usage. Under these updated conditions, the number of cycles is approximately 600. The actual longevity of the batteries also depends on usage patterns, as the discharge capacity gradually decreases with the number of charge cycles.
Q
Is it possible to use eneloop worldwide?
A
Yes, eneloop batteries can be used worldwide. Panasonic chargers (AC input chargers) come with an Auto Voltage function, allowing them to be used with AC 100–240 V voltages. However, be aware that a plug adapter may be required for the device if the AC outlet configuration differs from that used in the region where the product was purchased. If you need to use a plug adapter, please ensure it does not include a voltage conversion function—never use a voltage converter with a Panasonic battery charger.
Q
What's the difference between eneloop, eneloop pro, and eneloop lite?
A
Panasonic offers three eneloop series that provide optimal value, performance, and economy in different applications. The main difference between the products is in the battery capacity (how long it lasts before recharging) and how many times the battery may be reused. High-capacity batteries are generally best for high-drain devices, whereas low-capacity batteries are more suitable for low-drain devices. What eneloop battery is best for you will depend on how you plan to use it.
eneloop
eneloop excels in various low- and high-drain applications, from clocks or computer mouses to RC cars and camera flashes. Its design enables many charge/discharge cycles for outstanding cost performance.
eneloop pro
High-capacity eneloop pro lasts about 1.3x longer* per use than eneloop and is ideal in high-drain devices such as cameras, RC toys, and strobes, delivering stable voltage up to depletion and necessitating fewer battery changes for professionals in the field.
* Varies according to devices used and usage conditions.
eneloop lite
eneloop lite provides excellent value for low-drain and mid-drain devices such as clocks, computer mouses, and remote controls, which don't require high-capacity batteries.

Q
How should I store my eneloop batteries?
A
Follow the guidelines below to secure battery life and optimize performance:
- Store eneloop in its original packaging. That way, you can keep batteries of the same manufacturing date together. Storing eneloop in its original packaging also helps to prevent oxidization and short-circuits from accidental contact with metal objects.
- Store eneloop at room temperature or in a cool, dry environment, and avoid areas of high humidity or direct sunlight. The ideal storage temperature range is 10–25 °C.
- Storage in temperatures higher than 35 °C should be avoided, as it can influence the self-discharge rate.
- In theory, cold temperatures are good for storing batteries. However, if eneloop is stored in a chilled area, such as a refrigerator, there is a high risk that condensation will form, leading to possible malfunction.
- If eneloop is stored in a cold environment, it should ideally be left to reach room temperature before use for best performance. Do not heat eneloop.
Q
How can I maximize the life of my eneloop batteries?
A
Follow the guidelines below to secure a long life and optimal performance:
- Avoid leaving flat eneloop batteries in a device for an extended period without charging them, as it can damage the electrode (over-discharge) and shorten its lifespan.
- Charge eneloop frequently. It's best to recharge eneloop batteries when they have consumed around 70% of their capacity. This reduces the chance of over-discharging, which is a major cause of battery damage.
- Keep eneloop away from high temperatures, as elevated temperatures increase internal pressure leading to potential leaks and a shorter lifespan.
- Don't share batteries between devices that are being used. For example, dedicate a group of 4 x AA eneloop batteries for use in a specific device. When an eneloop is taken out of the group, used in another device, and then replaced back into the original device, it may have a different power level than the others, resulting in uneven discharge levels among the batteries in the series and battery deterioration.
- To maximize the performance of eneloop, it is important to use identical batteries, such as those with the same product code, batteries purchased together, and those with the same charging/discharging time.
- Avoid using the same group of eneloop batteries in various devices that are subject to different usage conditions, as it will increase the performance gap between the batteries over time. Consider marking the batteries with a permanent marker to differentiate them for use in a specific device. For more information related to this topic, please click here.
- Regularly clean the eneloop battery terminals and the charger terminals with a dry cloth to prevent grease or dust from affecting their performance. Frequent cleaning will help maintain proper charging and discharging and prevent a reduction in discharge time.
Q
How do I know when eneloop is at the end of its usable life?
A
You can look out for the following symptoms that may indicate your eneloop need replacing:
- As eneloop is repeatedly charged and discharged, its usage time may gradually decrease. As a general guideline, consider replacing them when the usage time is reduced to about half the initial duration.
- When using a quick charger, replacing eneloop is advisable if the charging time becomes noticeably longer. If you need to replace an expired eneloop in a device that uses multiple batteries, consider replacing all of them simultaneously to avoid performance issues. Poor contact between the battery and the terminals can also cause performance issues. In such cases, try cleaning the positive and negative terminals of the battery, device, and charger with a clean cloth.
Q
How should I transport my eneloop batteries?
A
When transporting eneloop or storing them for an extended period, avoid contacting them with metallic objects such as keys, jewelry, coins, or mobile phones. Avoid keeping them in a metallic container, as it can short-circuit the battery, damaging it. If you require a carry case, using one made from resin is recommended, as it provides a safe and non-conductive environment for the batteries during transport or storage. By following these precautions, you can ensure the safety and optimal performance of your eneloop batteries.
Q
Can I mix different batteries and use them in my device?
A
Do not mix batteries of different capacities, types, brands, or ages in your device. Doing so may result in battery leaks from over-discharge. Also, never use a mix of dry batteries and eneloop in your device except when the manufacturer explicitly permits it. Finally, ensure all eneloop batteries are recharged simultaneously. For more information, please click here.
Q
How do I get the best performance from eneloop?
A
To ensure safe and effective usage of eneloop, follow these guidelines:
- Check the device manual to ensure battery compatibility. Always use the battery specified in the device manual. Using an incompatible battery may lead to the device not functioning or having reduced operating time.
- Pay attention to the positive and negative polarity and insert batteries correctly. In devices that use multiple batteries, incorrect insertion of one battery may cause others in the series to charge it, leading to heat generation, leakage, or battery rupture. Verify the proper orientation before inserting the battery.
- Keep batteries away from metal objects such as jewelry, keys, and coins, as this could cause a short circuit, leading to overheating, leakage, or rupture.
- Allocate a set of batteries of the same brand, type, and manufacturing date for use in a specific device. Mixing different types of batteries, such as alkaline, manganese, and rechargeable batteries, can result in leakage, rupture, and reduced battery lifespan.
- Do not mix old and new batteries. Mixing old and new batteries may reduce their performance or cause leakage.
- Avoid damaging the battery's outer label. Using batteries with peeled-off or damaged labels can lead to a short circuit. Ensure the battery label is intact before use.
- Turn off the device's power after use. Failure to do so can cause over-discharge and leakage.
- Remove batteries when the device will not be used for an extended period. Leaving batteries inside the device for prolonged periods may result in leakage, damaging the device's terminals.
- Store batteries appropriately. Store them at room temperature, away from direct sunlight, high temperatures, and high humidity.
- Keep batteries out of reach of children. If ingestion occurs, seek medical attention immediately.
Q
Can eneloop be used in submersible lights?
A
Do not use eneloop in devices with an airtight battery compartment, such as a waterproof torch. If eneloop is over-discharged, hydrogen gas is released from the battery. This is not a problem in conventional equipment because the hydrogen diffuses immediately. However, in devices where the battery compartment is sealed, hydrogen gas cannot diffuse, creating a risk of explosion if the gas ignites.
Q
Can eneloop be used for lights with a wire filament?
A
Yes, eneloop can be safely used for lights with a wire filament, also known as incandescent lights. There should be no problem using them in these types of lights.
Q
Can dry batteries be charged?
A
No, dry batteries cannot be charged. Dry batteries, including alkaline and manganese batteries, lithium batteries, button batteries, and Zinc Air batteries, are considered primary batteries and are not designed for recharging. Attempting to recharge these batteries can lead to accidents such as leakage. Therefore, it is essential never to recharge primary batteries. The batteries shown in the graphic are examples of non-rechargeable primary batteries. Please note that the sizes and product designs may vary by country.
Representative non-rechargeable primary battery products.
Q
Why is it important to charge and use groups of eneloop batteries together?
A
There are two main reasons why simultaneous charging and use is necessary:
1. Prevent mixing batteries of different capacities
- All batteries, whether single-use dry or rechargeable, experience capacity reduction over time during storage. Even rechargeable batteries purchased together can have varying capacities due to differences in manufacturing and storage conditions. Batteries stored with a charge six months ago might also have different capacities compared to those recently charged.
- By dedicating groups of eneloop batteries for use in a specific device and recharging them together as needed, you can avoid mixing batteries with different capacities, which helps maintain consistent performance and prevents issues caused by using multiple batteries with mismatched capacities in your device.
2. Prevent mixing depleted batteries or those with lower capacity
- When multiple eneloop batteries are used together, and one is depleted more than the others, it can cause the most depleted battery to run out earlier than the others. This can place extreme stress on the battery, over-discharging it and sometimes causing liquid leakage during recharging. The same situation can arise if batteries of different brands and capacities are used in the device.
- To ensure the best performance from your eneloop batteries, it is best to use identical batteries in grouped sets dedicated for use in specific devices where the charge and discharge history of the batteries are matched.
Group your batteries by device
If your device requires multiple batteries, purchase a set of eneloop batteries for use exclusively in that device for best performance.
Because each group of batteries is charged/discharged under the same conditions, there is less variation in capacity and rate of deterioriation among batteries. Optimal charge/discharge performance can be secured.
If one or more batteries is shared between devices, the number of charge/discharge cycles and the rate of battery degradation will differ among the batteries used in the device. This can potentially lead to issues such as variation in capacities, over-discharging, and a reduction of charge/discharge cycles.
Q
Why can't I mix different battery types, ages, and conditions?
A
You should not mix different battery types, ages, and conditions when using multiple batteries at the same time in your devices for several reasons:
- When different batteries are used together, each battery's capacity is consumed at a different rate. If new and old batteries, or batteries with varying charge levels, are used together, the battery with the lowest capacity will run out of power first. The other batteries may continue to discharge, causing the low-capacity battery to be over-discharged. This can accelerate the deterioration of your eneloop batteries.
- Mixing different batteries in your device, such as high- and low-capacity eneloop or a mix of dry batteries and eneloop batteries, can damage batteries with lower capacity. This damage may accelerate the deterioration of the batteries.
To ensure safe and efficient usage, it is best to use eneloop of the same type and model number and ensure they are purchased, charged, and used together. Following these guidelines can prevent potential damage and extend their lifespan.
Q
Is it possible to top up eneloop at any time?
A
Yes, it is possible to top up eneloop any time. eneloop is resistant to the memory effect (which can occur when the battery is repeatedly recharged before it has been fully discharged, causing it to "remember" the shorter capacity), so you're free to top up the battery even if it is not fully depleted. Completely discharging eneloop and then recharging it can lead to over-discharging, electrode damage, and a shorter overall lifespan. Recharging your eneloop batteries before they are fully depleted is recommended to ensure optimal performance and lifespan.
Q
Can I use rechargeable batteries that haven't been used for a while?
A
For eneloop
Thanks to their inherently low self-discharge characteristics, fully charged eneloop batteries can be used after several years in storage, depending on the storage environment.
For Ni-MH batteries other than eneloop
If these batteries have not been used for one year or less, they can be recharged and used as before. However, in rare cases, the chemical reaction inside the battery may deteriorate due to long-term disuse, resulting in a shortened usage time. This condition is temporary and can be resolved after two or three cycles of charging and discharging (repeated recharging and use in devices). However, if a battery has not been used for over a year, its performance may deteriorate due to component deterioration or over-discharge. Recharging the battery once every six months is recommended to prevent internal deactivation and over-discharge. This practice will help maintain the battery's performance and extend its usable life.
[Charging]
Q
When should I replenish my eneloop batteries?
A
There is no significant difference between charging eneloop before or after use. However, recharging is recommended when about 70%–75% of the battery's capacity has been consumed to avoid the risk of damage from over-discharging.
Q
After purchasing eneloop, do I need to recharge them before use?
A
eneloop batteries are charged at the factory before shipment. However, after purchasing them, it is recommended to recharge them before use unless it is an emergency, as they may naturally discharge due to environmental or temperature changes during shipment and storage.
[Malfunction]
Q
My equipment does not work. Why?
A
There could be several possible causes for the issue:
- Cause 1: Not Charged
Your eneloop batteries may not have been charged properly or stored for too long and become discharged. Try charging the batteries again.
- Cause 2: Dirty Terminals
Check if the device's terminals or the eneloop battery terminals are dirty. If so, clean them using a clean, dry cloth.
- Cause 3: Over-discharged
Sometimes, using eneloop until it is completely depleted or leaving it in the device for an extended period can lead to over-discharge. As a result, it may no longer charge properly and appear to run out of charge prematurely. In such situations, try recharging the battery 2–3 times to see if the issue is resolved. If the problem persists, it indicates deterioration, and replacement with a new one is recommended.
Q
What should I do if eneloop heats up during use?
A
If your eneloop heats up during use, it could be due to a short circuit caused by the label getting caught on the device terminals during insertion. In such a situation, if you notice fluid leaking from the battery, follow these steps:
- Immediately cover the battery with a thick cloth to prevent any potential splashing of leaked liquid.
- Remove it from the device as soon as possible to prevent further damage.
- Allow the battery to cool down sufficiently before disposing of it.
For information about safe temperature during charging, please click here.
Q
Why has my eneloop battery operating time decreased so much?
A
If you notice a significant decrease in the operating time of your eneloop batteries, the following symptoms may indicate that they need replacing:
- If you have been using the eneloop battery extensively and its operating time has decreased even after charging, it might be time to replace it. As a guideline, if the operating time is reduced by half, consider replacing it.
- If charging one eneloop battery becomes increasingly difficult, for example, if it takes significantly longer to charge compared to other batteries of the same type, replacing that specific battery is recommended. In such cases, if you need to replace a dead battery in a device, it is advisable to replace all batteries in the device at the same time to avoid over-discharging the others. However, they may not require replacement if the issue is due to intermittent contact between the battery and device terminals.
- If the battery charge never completes or takes 2x to 3x longer than the normal charging time, it indicates potential issues. Clean the eneloop battery terminals and charger terminals, and if the issue is not resolved, consider replacing the battery.
[Safety]
Q
What should I do if my eneloop leaks?
A
If an eneloop battery leaks, take the following steps:
- Handle with care: The electrolyte leaked from the battery is strongly alkaline and can cause harm. Avoid direct contact with the leaked material.
- Protect yourself: If the leaked liquid gets in the eyes, avoid rubbing them. Wash them with a large amount of clean water. Seek medical advice as soon as possible.
- Prevent further damage: Clean any leaked material from clothes, furniture, or any surface with which it may have come into contact to avoid further damage.
- Dispose of leaking batteries: Leaking batteries are no longer suitable for use and should be discarded appropriately. Follow local regulations for battery disposal.
Q
What could cause eneloop to leak?
A
eneloop batteries are designed to be leak-proof. However, under certain circumstances, leakage can still occur for specific reasons. The potential causes of leakage are as follows:
- When eneloop is over-discharged due to mixing old or new batteries, using batteries with different states of charge, or leaving the battery in a device for an extended period without recharging, it can lead to leakage.
- If eneloop experiences a short circuit, which can happen if the battery label gets caught on the device terminals during insertion, it may activate a built-in valve to release gases generated inside the battery, preventing it from rupturing. However, this valve activation can also lead to leakage.
- If the battery continues to be charged without interruption due to a malfunction or other reasons, it can result in leakage.
Q
What should I do if a battery is swallowed?
A
If a battery is accidentally swallowed, it can be dangerous and potentially life-threatening. The chemicals and materials inside the battery can cause chemical burns and damage the digestive system. If someone swallows a battery, seek immediate medical attention at the nearest hospital or call emergency services.
Q
I washed my clothes together with some eneloop batteries. What should I do?
A
If eneloop is washed with clothes and water gets into them, it can cause rusting and interfere with the battery's safety valve operation. Although it is rare for a battery to leak when washed with clothing, it is strongly recommended to rewash the clothing to ensure any potential chemical residue or damage is removed.
Q
What should I do if the outer tube or seal comes off my eneloop battery?
A
If the outer tube or seal of an eneloop battery comes off, immediately discontinue the use of the battery. This can lead to short-circuiting, which may cause equipment damage, overheating, or even burns. Do not attempt to wrap some tape around the battery to fix it; avoid using it and properly dispose of it following appropriate battery recycling guidelines.

Q
What is Smart Charge Function?
A
Smart Charge is a technology equipped to select Panasonic chargers that detects when each individual eneloop battery is approaching a full charge and shuts off power to that slot just before it overflows. By contrast, some battery chargers lacking this function will continue charging the battery even if it is full, potentially over-charging it and reducing its life. Furthermore, Smart Charge can improve recharging efficiency and reduce charging time by about 5% compared to chargers lacking this function*.
* According to Panasonic testing using the BQ-CC08 (launched in Japan in November 2011). Charging efficiency and speed vary depending on the battery condition, storage conditions, and other factors.
Q
What is the Refresh Function on some eneloop chargers?
A
This function erases the memory effect from affected eneloop batteries. Equipped to select Panasonic battery chargers, Refresh Function discharges and recharges the battery to restore its performance.
Q
Can I check the remaining capacity of my eneloop batteries while charging?
A
Selected Panasonic chargers feature LED lights on the front of the device that indicate each eneloop battery's charging progress using different colors (note that the BQ-CC65 has an LCD to show this information). A red light means the battery has 20% or less capacity remaining, yellow means it has between 20% and 80% capacity remaining, and green means the battery has 80% or more capacity remaining. The light turns off when the battery is at or near 100% capacity, flashes yellow when it's approaching end-of-life, and flashes red when it has reached the end of life.
Q
What is the Battery Checker function?
A
Available on select Panasonic chargers, the Battery Checker function indicates when the inserted battery's capacity has declined by means of an LED light. For example, the BQ-CC55 has a separate LED above each charging slot. If a battery is approaching the end of its life, the LED blinks yellow after charging is complete, alerting the user to order a replacement battery so they can avoid the inconvenience of a dead battery. When a battery reaches the end of its life, the LED flashes red. The period between the yellow blinking and the red blinking may vary depending on the device used, frequency of use, and other factors. When an LED flashes yellow, we suggest ordering a replacement immediately.
Q
What is Individual Charge Control?
A
Individual Charge Control is a technology available on select Panasonic chargers that enables individual battery charging. This means you can charge a single battery (you don't need to insert batteries in pairs or use specific slots to charge) or combinations of different battery sizes and capacities in any slots you choose. If there is a problem with one of the batteries, the safety system only shuts off power to the affected battery, allowing the others to continue charging. It's also useful when recharging batteries at different stages of depletion: power is shut off to individual slots as each battery becomes full. Products with Individual Charge Control have a discrete LED for each slot that indicates the charging progress of each battery using different colors (except the BQ-CC65, which has an LCD). The light turns off when the battery is full, flashes yellow when it's approaching end-of-life, and flashes red when the battery has expired.
Q
How does the Dry Battery Detection function work on selected Panasonic chargers?
A
Dry Battery Detection is a safety feature designed to prevent damage when dry batteries are mistakenly inserted into a charger. If you accidentally place dry batteries in the charger, this function will detect them and prevent any charging attempt by shutting off the power. This is important because charging non-rechargeable dry batteries can lead to dangerous situations such as overheating, battery rupture, or leakage. Note that this function operates automatically and cannot be disabled.

Q
What should I do if a sizzling noise comes from the charger during operation?
A
If you hear a sizzling or vibration from the charger during operation, there's no need to worry from a safety perspective. This noise is typically caused by the electric current flowing through a transformer or winding wire inside the charger's components. Despite the noise, the charger can still be used safely without any concern.

Q
What charger is best for eneloop?
A
When using Panasonic Rechargeable or Panasonic eneloop batteries, use a charger specifically designed to work with eneloop batteries made by Panasonic.
Q
Can I use another brand's charger with eneloop batteries?
A
We recommend using Panasonic chargers, which are designed for eneloop. Using chargers from other brands that may not be suitable for eneloop could lead to improper charging or potential risks. Similarly, Panasonic does not recommend charging other manufacturers' rechargeable batteries with Panasonic chargers. It is best to use chargers and batteries from the same brand for optimal performance and safety.
Q
Can I charge eneloop with a charger designed for Ni-Cd batteries?
A
Do not charge eneloop with a charger intended for Ni-Cd batteries, as there are significant differences in the charging conditions between the two types of batteries. Always use a charger that is specifically designed for the type of battery you are using. Charging batteries with an unsuitable charger can lead to issues such as leakage or degraded battery performance.

Q
Is it normal for eneloop or Panasonic chargers to heat up while charging?
A
Yes, heat generation during the charging process is normal. The extent of heat generated can depend on various factors, including the type of charger used (quick charging vs. normal charging), the presence of a protection cover, the initial capacity and remaining capacity of the eneloop battery, and the degree of degradation. While the surface temperature of eneloop batteries may reach up to 55 °C (hot to the touch) during charging, this is generally not a problem. Panasonic chargers are equipped with functions to detect and control the temperature and shut off charging if a potential risk is encountered.
Q
I purchased a charger set, but the included eneloop won't charge. Why?
A
If you purchased a charger set including eneloop AA or AAA batteries and find that the batteries are not charging, it is likely because of an insulating tray or sheet that comes with the charger. The insulation prevents the batteries from discharging before they reach you. Please remove the sheet from the charger and dispose of it in accordance with your municipality's regulations governing waste disposal. Insert the batteries as described in the user manual, and plug the charger into an AC outlet.
Q
What should I do if I cannot charge my eneloop properly?
A
If you encounter issues with charging eneloop and notice abnormal behavior in the charging indicator LEDs, there might be poor contact between the battery and the charger terminals. This can be caused by dirt or other material on the terminals. Here are some steps to troubleshoot the issue:
- Gently wipe the eneloop battery terminals and the charger terminals with tissue paper or a clean cloth to remove any dirt or residue.
- Try rolling the eneloop battery while it is inside the charger. This rolling motion can help dislodge any debris from the terminals, potentially improving the contact and enabling normal recharging.
- If the problem persists and the battery's performance has decreased significantly compared to when it was first purchased, it might be time to consider replacing it with a new one.
