OLED vs LED vs 4K: which should you buy?
Buying a new television doesn’t need to be overwhelming. We cut out the jargon in this guide on how to choose your TV.
What is 4K TV?
While the traditional HD (high-definition) standard is 1080 pixels measured vertically, 4K TVs have a resolution of at least 3840 x 2160 pixels. To put it simply, 4K resolution promises clearer, crisper images due to the increased number of pixels — 8.3 million to be exact. That's four times that of a regular HDTV! 4K technology not only boasts a higher resolution, but also a wider colour gamut, making images look even more realistic.
What is an LED TV?
LED (light-emitting diode) uses the same basic technology as LCD (liquid crystal display): liquid crystals lie between two layers of polarised glass, and can either allow light to pass through or block it.
LCD TVs today are often considered LED TVs too, because they use LED lights as backlight.
With Panasonic's LED televisions, this backlight is combined with signal processing for complete control over the brightness in hundreds of small areas in the TV, producing images with high contrast and exceptional depth.
What is an OLED TV?
OLEDs, or organic light-emitting diodes, have had a huge impact on TV technology in recent years. These organic compounds can be made so thin, small and flexible that they can be used as individual pixels on your TV screen.
These TVs light up when electricity passes through them, with the brightness depending on the intensity of the electric current. When there is no current, no light is emitted, producing a deep, rich black. With the current technology, you won’t be able to find a more satisfying “absolute black” than on an OLED TV.
