What's LUMIX G?
The innovative small system cameras
With the Micro Four Thirds System standard, the LUMIX G overturns conventional notions of a camera.
By adopting the Micro Four Thirds System standard and developing a camera that eliminates the mirror box and optical viewfinder unit, the DMC-G1 revolutionized the world of DSLR cameras in September 2008 as the world's first mirrorless camera. Combining superb image quality, this made it possible to create a new Digital Single Lens Mirrorless (DSLM) camera that features Full-time Live View, high-speed, high-precision contrast AF, full HD video recording, and more.
The LUMIX G is committed to creating a new photographic culture by continuing to introduce innovative, high-performance cameras and lenses for this new-generation standard.
Live MOS Sensor and Venus Engine
The 4/3-type Live MOS sensor, with its wide dynamic range and low power consumption, and the Venus Engine imaging processor, with its superb noise reduction performance, are essential to the LUMIX G Digital Single Lens Mirrorless (DSLM) camera's exceptional image quality in both photo and video.
Linking smoothly with the Live MOS sensor, the Venus Engine processes a large amount of signals at high speed, making it possible to record Full-HD video.
And Panasonic equipped the LUMIX G with the Supersonic Wave Filter as part of the Dust Reduction System designed to prevent dust and other foreign matter from adhering to the image sensor.
LUMIX G / LEICA DG Lenses
The LUMIX G offers the versatile lineup of LUMIX G / LEICA DG lenses based on the Micro Four Thirds System standard. The premium lens brand “X” is newly added to the LUMIX G. Crystallizing Panasonic's optical technologies, it features superb image rendering for lifelike textures, crisp edge-to-edge contrast, a unique Nano Surface Coating for minimal ghosts and flaring.
High-performance Video
The LUMIX G can make it possible to create high-quality image expression in video recording with not only smooth gradation but also excellent resolution and color reproduction, which makes the image come alive.
The video recording capability comes with a variety of options in its format and bitrate to meet wide-ranging needs, and connection terminals for more flexible shooting. LUMIX G is packed with advanced technologies developed by Panasonic for its professional video creation.
Based on the Micro Four Thirds System Standard
The LUMIX G complies with the Micro Four Thirds System standard. The features that clearly set this standard apart from the Four Thirds System standard include a flange-back distance (mount-to-sensor distance) that is approx. 50% shorter, a lens mount with an outer diameter that is approx. 6mm smaller, and an increase from 9 to 11 electrical contacts in the mount*.
In addition, not only the camera body but also the Micro Four Thirds lenses are smaller, and this is particularly true for the wide-angle and high-power zoom lenses, while maintaining the superior image quality of the 4/3-type image sensor.
* Image sensor diagonal dimensions are the same for both Four Thirds System and Micro Four Thirds System standards.
Compact and Lightweight Body
The mirrorless structure needs no space for the mirror to move, and no penta mirror. This makes it possible to shorten the flange-back distance, making the body more compact.
Compact Lens Design
LUMIX G / LEICA DG lenses are revolutionary small and lightweight. Yet image quality
is remarkably high, thanks to a fusion of advanced optical technologies and
industry-leading digital technologies.
Light Speed AF
The LUMIX G features high speed AF system “Light Speed AF” which helps to catch
even the most fleeting photo opportuniDes. You can quickly focus on moving subjects,
such as when you're shooting sports scenes or animals.
High-Precision Contrast AF
The Contrast AF boasts higher accuracy even in shooting at small F value. Focusing of
the Contrast AF is controlled by the image sensor so that no mechanical margin of error
occurs to achieve precise focusing.
Free-angle Monitor and Electronic Viewfinder
The LUMIX G Digital Single Lens Mirrorless (DSLM) cameras let you comfortably frame
your shots with the LVF (Live View Finder) and flexible free-angle rear monitor. The
viewing method can also be selected to match your shooting conditions and
composition, which makes them ideal for active shooting.
Touch-screen Operation
The touch-screen operation elevates cameras operability even higher. It includes Touch
Shutter for shooting, Touch AF for focusing – even when shooting videos – and
Touch-scroll Playback for instant image retrieval.
Full-time Live View
Both the LVF (Live View Finder) and the rear monitor give you a Full-time Live View of
what you're shooting with a field of view of approx. 100%. You can confirm the depth of
field and shutter speed effects prior to shooting.
Versatile Wi-Fi® Functions
The latest LUMIX G series integrate s a Wi-Fi® connectivity (IEEE 802.11 b/g/n).
With the “Panasonic Image App”, you can utilize a smartphone / tablet as another
control / monitor to zoom, set focus, shoot and play.
