Mark Spitz with Katie Couric in AthensAthens Greece, August 17th, 2004
So, how are these Games going? Well, I’ve been to many Olympic Games over the years, and I think the Greek people have a lot to be proud of. I know I’m proud to be here. The Opening Ceremonies were the best I’d ever seen. Really spectacular.

Yesterday, we saw one of the most exciting swim races of the Games. Michael Phelps, who continues to pursue Olympic medals, set an American-best time in the 200-meter freestyle, winning himself a Bronze. Pieter van den Hoogenband of the Netherlands, arguably one of the best swimmers in the world and the Gold medal winner of this event at the Sydney Games, came in second, and the Gold medal winner here was Ian Thorpe, the Australian. Thorpe and van den Hoogenband are the two best swimmers in this event in the world, so Michael Phelps has a lot to be proud of.

Michael Phelps is having a phenomenal Games, and he needs to take things one day at a time. I look forward to watching his next races, and seeing the other Americans compete.

That’s all for now. I’ll check in with you again tomorrow.
